Avangrid Foundation Donates $10,000 to Ibero Senior Center
The Avangrid Foundation, the primary philanthropic arm of a diversified clean energy company and Rochester Chamber Partner member AVANGRID, Inc., in partnership with RG&E has announced a $10,000 donation to the Ibero-American Action League senior center, Centro de Oro located at 817 East Main Street in Rochester. Ibero is also a Rochester Chamber member.
“We are so pleased to receive this generous grant”, said Raquel Serrano, Director of Ibero’s Elderly Services. “These funds will support the services we provide to Latino seniors in our socialization center which is growing rapidly along with our needs.”
According to a recent study of seniors using the Geriatric Depression Scale, 100% of the participants indicated that they prefer to leave their homes to do new activities and experience new things. The socialization provided in Centro de Oro’s is a protective factor in decreasing cognitive decline and depression. The Centro de Oro serves up to 90 Latino seniors a week, including many who relocated from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
“I am excited that the Avangrid Foundation, in partnership with RG&E, has invested in this important community resource for seniors attending Centro De Oro”, said Ivette Torres, Public Affairs Lead Analyst at RG&E. “It is moving to hear stories of the many seniors who have found a home away from home in Centro de Oro, especially those displaced after Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico.”
Serrano explained, “With the Avangrid Foundation funds we will increase health and wellness activities that will continue to improve social-emotional levels, optimize interdependence and provide therapeutic activities like Zumba and culturally-relevant activities.”
"I have loved everything new that has been going on at Centro de Oro. Thanks to the funds, we will have more options and activities like going on field trips and getting to know more about our city”, said Nestor Pinera, a 62-year old Centro de Oro volunteer. “At our age, we can still do things that serve as physical, mental and emotional therapy and the grant helps our center shine brightly in our community!”
