FLPPS Workplace Team Building Competition Yields Mighty Food Donation
Two weeks prior to their annual holiday party, the Human Resource department at Rochester Chamber member Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS) unleashed a challenge to its 40 staff members. The teams, randomly assigned by HR, were asked to bring in the most food items by Friday, January 26, 2018. The winning team members would earn four hours of Paid Time Off.
Human Resources team member and creator of the benevolent idea Chris Brandstetter said, “We thought this would be a fun way to rally our internal community to support our larger community. I never thought we would reach these types of numbers!”
Three days before the final tally, the teams had racked up more than 700 items including canned soups, fruits, vegetables, boxes of cereal, macaroni and cheese, and even cans of pet food. The organizers had no idea over the next three days they would collect nearly FIVE TIMES that amount before they were finished.
FLPPS Executive Director Carol Tegas said, “I knew they were onto something big when people started ordering deliveries from Wegmans, and they began strategizing which team could bring in the largest amount on the last day to surpass the other teams. My staff’s generosity and innovation always inspires me.”
At 5 p.m. Friday, January 26, the collective FLPPS Team had contributed nearly 3,300 food items to donate to two local food cupboards. The winning team was announced the next day at the annual holiday party held at Tegas’ home.
