Roberts Wesleyan College Earns NCAA Division II Award of Excellence
College recognized as grand prize winner for fundraising efforts in support of Golisano Children’s Hospital
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roberts Wesleyan College is pleased to announce that the Roberts athletics department was recently awarded the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for student-athletes’ fundraising efforts in support of Golisano Children’s Hospital. The college was selected as the grand prize winner at the NCAA Convention on January 15, ahead of runner-up Belmont Abbey College and third place finalist, Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Each year, the NCAA national Division II student-athlete advisory committee selects the Award of Excellence winner based on events and criteria that exemplify the Division II pillars of philosophy, community engagement and student-athlete leadership. A total of 65 institutions and two conferences were recognized for their creativity in advancing relationships within their communities last year.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Roberts student-athletes led a month-long fundraising effort during the 2018-2019 basketball season for the Onnie Wells Child Life Fund. The month-long endeavor culminated in a double-header basketball game where additional proceeds were raised and matched by a generous donor, totaling $10,500 in proceeds that were then donated directly to the hospital.
“Roberts Wesleyan College athletics is honored to receive this prestigious award from NCAA Division II,” said Bob Segave, director of athletics at Roberts Wesleyan College. “This is our second time as a finalist because of the effort that our student-athletes have given to make a difference in our community. Working with Golisano Children’s Hospital has been a rewarding partnership that has provided our student-athletes an opportunity to give back to our community.”
This is the second consecutive year the Roberts athletics department has raised funds for Golisano Children’s Hospital. As the recipient of the Award of Excellence, the Roberts athletics department will also receive $2,500 to put towards future community engagement efforts and events.
