Roberts Wesleyan College to Launch New Degree Offerings in Public Health

Rochester Chamber Partner member Roberts Wesleyan College will launch two new degree programs in public health beginning fall 2019. The Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree offerings were approved by the New York State Education Department and will expand Roberts Wesleyan College’s growing healthcare and business program offerings.

The new curricula focuses on critically examining how biological, behavioral, social and environmental factors affect a population’s health, and will prepare students to respond with the creation and evaluation of programs and policies designed to improve health in diverse communities and populations.

“The major focus of a degree in public health is on promoting good health in the community through focused education, evidence-based research and with projects promoting healthy lifestyles,” said Dr. Michele Kraynik, developer of the new programs and program director for the health administration programs at Roberts Wesleyan College. “Under the Affordable Care Act — and other initiatives such as Medicare and Medicaid Managed Care — there has been a shift away from the acute care setting and into the community where costs are lower. This makes the major focus for healthcare providers on preventing illnesses and diseases instead of treatment. This shift was the inspiration for offering the new public health degrees at Roberts.”

In addition to promoting a prevention model in healthcare, public health professionals also play a critical role in preparing for emergencies and responding to them. This means public health graduates will also be equipped to prepare for and manage emergencies, as well as tackle health challenges in our community and beyond. Graduates of the public health programs will be prepared to go on to have careers in health education, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health services administration and more.
