Greater Rochester Chamber SOOP Interns Explore Careers in Advanced Manufacturing

date
August 26, 2024

This summer, Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce had the privilege of hosting two interns from the City of Rochester’s Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP). Guided by Melanie DellaPietra, Talent Strategy Partner, Ahnasti Tate and Markus McClurkin embarked on a journey to explore the diverse career opportunities available in the Greater Rochester region, particularly in the rapidly growing field of Advanced Manufacturing.

Throughout the summer, the interns connected with a variety of local leaders and companies, each offering unique insights into the region's workforce landscape. At the Rochester Manufacturing & Technology Association (RTMA), Ahnasti and Markus learned about the foundations of advanced manufacturing in our region. At Circle Optics, Inc., the interns were introduced to cutting-edge technologies like Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing, seeing how these tools are integral to the company's workflow and innovation process. At Monroe Community College’s Optics program, they explored the educational pathways that support careers in optics and photonics, gaining an understanding of how these programs prepare students for high-demand roles in advanced manufacturing.

A highlight of the internship was “The Micron Journey - A NY Tech Corridor Story” presentation facilitated by Tech Rochester, where they learned about Micron Technology’s expansion in upstate New York. This was followed by a visit to the Monroe Community College Forward Center, where they explored innovative training opportunities, including NC3 certification, virtual reality career exploration, and robot demonstrations.

Ahnasti and Markus also explored key workforce development initiatives, such as the ACT WorkKeys assessment and the RETAIN program, which provide essential support and guidance to new graduates.

The two participated in the Summer Advanced Manufacturing Experience (SAME) program at Monroe 2 BOCES, gaining hands-on experience with machining tools, mills, and lathes. Their journey also took them to the ROC the Block event at Wilson High School, where they shared their summer learnings and explored additional career options, including a simulated truck driving experience.

The internship culminated in a hybrid presentation at the Greater Rochester Chamber office, where Ahnasti and Markus shared their journey and insights with a diverse group of workforce partners. They also created engaging video reels to share their learnings from the experience in a way that was accessible and fun for their peers.

Candid Q&A after Ahnasti and Markus' presentations allowed them to share their own perspectives on how career paths are marketed to students with our workforce partners, highlighting the importance of reaching students in a way that truly resonates.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the local leaders and companies that partnered with us to make this summer a success, with the addition of OptiPro Systems, Optimax Systems, Inc., L3Harris Technologies, Labby, Cameron Community Ministries, and NextCorps Luminate Accelerator. The experiences gained by Ahnasti and Markus underscore the vital importance of exposing more students to these opportunities, which pave the way for promising careers and a bright future for our young people.
