October 11, 2024

Rochester, NY – Dozens of Salvation Army officers and staff, including several from the Empire State Division, have been mobilized to provide emergency support for those impacted by the recent hurricanes that have caused historic damage across the southeastern United States.

Rochester Area Services is ready to respond should they receive the call to join Buffalo, Binghamton and other New York Area Services who are currently in Georgia and North Carolina. In partnership with other organizations, hundreds of Salvation Army volunteers have provided over 344,000 hot meals in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. More help is now on the way to help those affected by Hurricane Milton.

Additionally, The Salvation Army has also delivered over a quarter of a million meal kits, drinks and snacks, as well as emergency supplies like blankets and medical kits.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services has been responding to natural disasters and other emergencies within the United States for over 100 years. The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester’s Director of County Operations Major Rick Starkey has been involved in several of these responses, including 9/11 and Hurricane Andrew. He says local staff and officers are prepared for that familiar call in the hours and days ahead.

"The Salvation Army stands at the ready to assist those affected by Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene,” he confirmed. “We have personnel and equipment ready to serve those in need.”

Major Rick also addressed the best way that individuals can respond to the current emergency situation.

"In times like this, many people are just wondering how they can help,” he says. “In truth, the best way to help right now is with a monetary donation to our Emergency Disaster Services, so that those on the ground serving can purchase exactly what is needed."

Major Rick stressed that 100% of all donations made at disaster.salvationarmyusa.org will go directly to supporting hurricane disaster relief efforts.
