M&T Bank Names Steve Epping Rochester Regional President
Current Regional President Dan Burns Promoted to Area Executive Overseeing Upstate New York, Western New York, and Pennsylvania
ROCHESTER, N.Y., October 23, 2024 – M&T Bank (NYSE: MTB) announced the appointment of local banking industry executive Steve Epping as its Regional President for Rochester. A 32-year veteran of M&T Bank, Epping succeeds the bank’s longtime leader in Rochester, Dan Burns, who has been promoted to Area Executive for Upstate New York, Western New York and Pennsylvania.
In his new role, Epping will collaborate with M&T Bank’s local community banking leadership team — including members of its retail banking, business banking, commercial banking, wealth management, government banking, and charitable teams — to develop and lead strategies to serve customers and communities in the Flower City and Finger Lakes regions. Epping will continue to serve in his role as Commercial Senior Group Manager for Rochester Commercial and Industrial (C&I), a key role in providing capital for local business expansion and regional economic growth.
“Over his 30+ years with M&T Bank, Steve has provided countless businesses with customized financial solutions and expert guidance to fuel their success and growth. A community banker who knows how to leverage M&T Bank’s strength and capabilities for local customers, Steve will excel as our Rochester Regional President,” said Dan Burns. “As I shift into a new leadership role supporting teams across New York State and Pennsylvania, I’m looking forward to working with Steve and all our Regional Presidents to cultivate local growth and deliver on M&T Bank’s purpose to make a difference in people’s lives.”
As Area Executive, Burns will have expanded managerial responsibilities across a wide region that is home to several longstanding M&T markets where the bank is a leading deposit-holder, consumer and business lender. Burns will now work closely with regional presidents and regional commercial bank teams across the New York State regions of Western New York, Rochester, Central New York, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, Capital Region, and Mid-Hudson Valley, as well as Western, Central, Northern and Southeast Pennsylvania. He will provide support and strategic resources to meet local needs as he works across multiple regions to support the growth of M&T’s commercial bank.
Under its local engagement model, M&T separates the geographic areas it serves into community regions led by regional presidents. Because they know their communities best, these locally based community banking teams work to create differentiated strategies to serve their markets, combining the capabilities of a large institution with the care and empathy of a neighborhood bank. They also make decisions locally about community activities, grants, and lending.
“From our vibrant arts and cultural scene to our legacy of innovation to our resilient economy, Rochester is packed full of potential, and I am determined to do my part to help our hometown thrive,” said Steve Epping. “As Regional President, I’ll enjoy the unique opportunity to build on M&T Bank’s longstanding commitment to Rochester as I guide our community banking team through the important work of ensuring local businesses and families have the resources, capital, and guidance they need to achieve their goals and dreams. I’m excited to get started in the new role, and I’m grateful to Dan Burns for his friendship as well as the support and advice he has shared over the three decades we’ve worked together.”
In addition to his role at M&T Bank, Epping currently serves as a member of the CDC board of directors for Pursuit, a nationally recognized community-focused lender serving customers in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. He also represents M&T on the boards of YMCA of Greater Rochester, Rochester Downtown Development Corporation and the Monroe Golf Club.
Deeply committed to the Rochester community, Burns currently serves on the Board of Directors for OneROC, a collaborative capacity-building organization driving regional growth, Greater Rochester Enterprise, University of Rochester Medical Center, Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, NextCorps, and CMAC. He has previously served on numerous additional nonprofit boards throughout his career.
Epping and Burns will both continue to operate out of M&T Bank’s Rochester regional headquarters at 3 City Center in Downtown Rochester. M&T Bank employs over 400 people and operates 24 branch locations in the Greater Rochester region and is the largest U.S. Small Business Administration lender in the Rochester/Buffalo SBA District. Over the last decade, M&T Bank has donated more than $15 million to local nonprofits in Rochester.
