September 22, 2022 - The Salvation Army is meeting the needs of Hurricane Fiona survivors and first responders in Puerto Rico by providing mass feeding, sheltering, charging, clean-up support, personal hygiene kits, emotional and spiritual care, and other services.

Today, The Salvation Army is coordinating delivery of various items from the mainland to Puerto Rico, including meals, clean-up kits, hygiene kits, etc. Trained Salvation Army emergency response teams are already on the ground in many locations, providing meals, water, and other services. By the end of September, they anticipate having 21 additional emergency disaster service personnel on the ground.

The Salvation Army has served more than 5,000 individuals and distributed the following items at its community centers in San Juan, Puerta de Tierra, Caguas, Centro, Bayamon, Mayaguez, Arecibo, and Loiza:

  • 5,759 prepared meals, food boxes and snacks
  • 7,752 bottles of water
  • 1,673 packs of diapers
  • 459 personal hygiene kits, 177 clean up kits and 107 blankets

Additional services and items provided include shower units and charging stations for people to charge personal devices like mobile phones, laptops and portable medical equipment. Emotional and spiritual support, children’s and adult clothing, and furniture are also available at local Salvation Army centers across Puerto Rico.

“Disaster relief is always about the long game. It’s about helping people to get their homes and their communities rebuilt.” said Captain Kathryn Eisley, Rochester Salvation Army Corps Officer. “It’s also about providing long-term emotional and spiritual care to disaster survivors, as sometimes the recovery on the inside can be harder than the recovery on the outside.”

This year marks the 60th anniversary of The Salvation Army’s local service in Puerto Rico. Their local support includes art and music programs, academic services, family services programs,

help with basic computer skills, addiction rehabilitation, mortgages and utility assistance, as well as spiritual, emotional, and clinical support for victims of crimes.

During times of disaster, 100 percent of designated donations to The Salvation Army are used for immediate response and long-term efforts.
