Rochester Salvation Army is “Eclipsing Hunger” with FREE Solar Eclipse Glasses
Local Businesses Partner with Nonprofit To Spread County-Wide Fundraiser & Food Drive
Rochester, NY – In celebration of the rare solar eclipse that will occur on April 8th, The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester is preparing to protect vulnerable neighbors by partnering with area businesses on a county-wide campaign.
“Eclipsing Hunger” combines a fundraiser and food drive with the distribution of FREE AAS/ISO certified solar eclipse glasses to the people of Monroe County.
Rochester’s Salvation Army has ordered over 5,000 solar eclipse glasses in preparation for this two-part campaign. A designated portion of the glasses will be distributed directly to the homeless, to those staying in shelters, and to Monroe County residents who come to The Salvation Army Emergency Family Services Pantry during the days leading up to the eclipse.
The remainder of the eclipse glasses will be shared with business partners around Rochester who are turning their locations into food donation drop-off sites. Customers and guests are encouraged to visit these businesses to exchange non-perishable food items for a FREE pair of solar eclipse glasses.
“Eclipsing Hunger” partner locations currently include Ide Family of Dealerships, Thirsty Turtle Sports Bar & Grill, Evans Bank branches in Rochester and more. Other supporting businesses without a storefront or open-door policy have chosen to make their collections an internal food drive for their employees.
Organizations across Monroe County are encouraged to join this unique effort by serving as additional “Eclipsing Hunger” locations. Interested businesses may purchase a fundraiser box of 50 eclipse glasses for $50 on a first-come-first-serve basis. Visit salarmy.us/Rocglasses for more information.
Proceeds from The Salvation Army’s solar eclipse glasses go directly to programs and services that help those in need throughout Greater Rochester.
