NYS Canal Corporation to Host Forum on Accessible Recreation on the Canalway

date
March 29, 2024

As part of the 2024-2025 Erie Canal Bicentennial celebration, NYS Canal Corporation invites Greater Rochester Chamber members and other community leaders to join in for the start of the SUNY / Erie Canal Bicentennial Forum Series.  The first segment will focus on Accessible Recreation on the Canalway. This session will convene on Wednesday, April 10, at Monroe Community College – Brighton Campus in Rochester. New York’s Chief Disability Officer Kim Hill will be the keynote speaker and panel moderator. To learn more about Kim, please see here.

Some important facts to consider:

  • One in four Americans lives with a disability, including 22.5 percent of all New Yorkers.
  • The after-tax disposable income for Americans living with a disability is $490 billion.
  • Many of these people do not currently recreate on or along the Canal due to lack of accessible options. The potential impact for added visitors, and therefore added spending, is further increased because these people recreate with friends and family. So opening up recreation for one person with a disability likely translates to another couple people joining that person.

Following two engaging panel discussions, stick around for a reception and product expo where vendors will have accessible equipment on display. To see the full agenda, please see here.

Municipal leaders, community planners and developers, and providers are encouraged to attend to discover new ways to enjoy the Canalway while ensuring accessibility for all.

Because space is limited, please complete the online registration as soon as possible at this link: https://AccessibleRecreationontheCanalway.eventbrite.com.
