Geared for Growth: Love Beets Growing Awareness and Accessibility for Superfoods in Greater Rochester, NY
Love Beets is making beets more accessible and delicious for the masses and grows and produces their products right here in Rochester, NY. Managing Director Hollie Johnson was featured on Geared for Growth on Wednesday, December 11th as part of Greater Rochester Chamber’s ongoing partnership with 13WHAM/FOX Rochester. Johnson shared more about the company’s history, the benefits of beets and what other work they have, and what their plans for expansion and growth are in the coming years.
Love Beets first opened in the United States in 2013, and opened their production facility nearly a decade ago in 2015. This facility allows them to grow and
produce all of their products here in the United States. “We’re really focused on making beets more convenient and easy for people to eat,” Johnson shared, “You don’t have to peel or boil them, you just open the package and have a fresh product ready to eat.” In the Greater Rochester region, Love Beets employs over 120 people, and they grow over 70% of their products in New York State, representing over 500 acres of production here.
As a superfood, beets have many health benefits, including properties that reduce blood pressure, boost energy, and contain lots of antioxidants. Love Beets has been advocating for this message and has seen a rapid expansion in the beet market over the past several years as people begin to understand these benefits. “As the knowledge spreads and as doctors begin to recommend the products, we’re seeing a lot of growth in the category,” Hollie explained, “And we’re here to make it really easy for you to consume them.” As part of this, they are focusing on how to make fruits and vegetables last in your fridges longer to make it easier to consume produce. Love Beets additionally sells pickled onions, carrots, cucumbers, jalapeño, cabbage, and more under the Veggie Confetti brand to make it easier to add produce to your plate at any opportunity.
Over the next ten years, Love Beets seeks to continue to expand in Greater Rochester, with a particular focus on sustainability. “Since our products are packaged, we will focus on how to continue to bring them to consumers in a way that is sustainable, both for the earth and for the planet,” Hollie explained. They will additionally continue to focus on growing awareness around the benefits of eating beets and expand their popularity for consumers. “We only have 1% of the planet eating beets right now,” Johnson noted.
